Year: 2023
The sign in front of the town reads "Port Haven." The wood is chipping, as is the paint - but it's easy to read none the less. Twenty years ago the sign that hung there was pristine, new. Time, weather, and fingernails have since changed the appearance.
Yes, you heard right. Fingernails.
In 2012, back when everyone swore the world would end in flames and destruction, the world was met with chaos instead. The dead clawed their way out of morgues, newly deceased even managed to dig up through their graves. They soon over powered us all.
But we're humans. We adapt. We conform to our surroundings, but most of all... we survive.
In the twenty years or so that we've had in this new world, we've managed to rebuild somewhat of a functional city. Most states have. I couldn't tell you about other countries, we don't have internet or cellphones anymore. We don't even have power. We trade with other towns close by us, which is the only reason I know they exist. Travelers pass through, stories get told, but... as far as outside information? We don't really have any of that.
Our town is protected by a wall built by the founders of Port Haven. Armed forces guard the gate and so far, we haven't had a Walker break in, in six years. Residents have to lock their bedroom doors... because walkers can't turn handles. This has helped keep walkers from sprouting up when people, elderly people mostly, die in their sleep.
Over all, Port Haven is a pretty safe place.
...Over all.
